How Much Do Cruise Ship Workers Make?

cruise salary

Within this report are facts and figures about every aspect of the cruise line’s business… including what it pays employees. Apart from their technical responsibilities, Chief Engineers need to have excellent communication skills to interact with other ship departments and outside vendors. They offer technical assistance and organize alterations and enhancements to the ship’s equipment. Certain jobs, like those of the ship’s entertainment, might only need a few hours of work per day. Yes, crew members receive free food for working onboard a ship, along with a cabin to sleep in (more on that later).

Cruise Ship Worker Benefits

Training is provided on board and may include safety, hospitality, and job-specific skills. Now that we’ve covered the salaries of cruise ship doctors and nurses, let’s move on to other jobs and services offered onboard. To become a captain on a cruise ship, a candidate must have several years of experience as a deck officer and must possess a master’s license from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The experience requirements vary depending on the size of the ship, but most captains have between 5 and 10 years of experience before being promoted to the role. It’s important to note that being a captain on a cruise ship is not just about sailing the ship. Captains are also responsible for the safety of the ship and its passengers, managing the crew, and ensuring that the ship runs smoothly.

FAQ on Cruise Staff Salary

However, they can provide a general understanding of the earning potential for skilled positions in the cruise industry. Most cruise ships have spas that offer a wide range of services, such as massages, facials, and body treatments. The cost of these services can vary depending on the cruise line and the type of service, but they’re typically more expensive than what you’d pay on land.

Captain Salaries

A less experienced captain of a small cruise ship can expect to earn around $44,000, while a captain of a mega-ship with over 20 years of experience can earn up to $177,000. Captains can also receive bonuses of up to $40,000 per year, as well as profit sharing of up to $3,000. While contracts can last between 2 and 11 months, most employees get to go home for a couple of months in between contracts. This gives workers a chance to rest, recharge, and spend time with family and friends. It’s worth noting that cruise ship contracts can last anywhere between 2 and 11 months, with most lasting 4 to 8 months. During this time, living expenses such as accommodation and food are usually covered by the cruise line, but employees may not have access to free Wi-Fi.

Management and supervisory roles on cruise ships are vital for ensuring smooth operations and maintaining high-quality services for passengers. These positions typically demand substantial experience in the industry, excellent leadership skills, and a deep understanding of their respective departments. As a result, salaries for management and supervisory roles are generally higher than those of entry-level or skilled positions. Skilled positions on cruise ships require more specific expertise and qualifications, making them ideal for professionals with relevant experience in their respective fields. These roles offer higher salaries compared to entry-level positions and often include additional benefits, such as increased opportunities for career growth. Let's take a closer look at some skilled positions and their corresponding salaries.

cruise salary

Not only does the staff work extremely hard to keep passengers happy, but the general consensus is that people working on a cruise ship are paid relatively little while working long hours. No other topic can raise as much controversy among cruise passengers as tipping. It’s not unusual for automatic gratuities to add up to $13-15 per person, per day. A couple taking a cruise for a week can expect another $200 added to their bill for gratuities alone. They are in charge of onboard sales, maintenance, and administrative duties in addition to responding to inquiries and grievances from visitors.

Compared to regular land-based occupations, working aboard a cruise ship offers certain benefits that suit a distinct lifestyle. Cruise ship nurses are responsible for responding to emergencies, treating passengers and crew members, and providing medical care. They require an ACLS certification, a minimum of three years of pertinent clinical experience, and a nursing license. Cruise ship doctors are in charge of overseeing the ship’s medical facilities, addressing medical crises, and providing medical care to both passengers and staff. They normally require at least three years of post-graduate clinical experience in addition to a concentration in family medicine or emergency medicine.

Factors Influencing Cruise Ship Salaries

cruise salary

A contract ranges anywhere from three to approximately eight months, depending on the position. Most senior management roles have 4-month contracts while most of the rest of the positions have 6-8 month contracts. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

By focusing on these areas, you'll be well-prepared to make the most of your earnings and enjoy a rewarding career in the cruise industry. As with other positions, the salaries mentioned above can vary based on factors such as the cruise line's reputation, the ship's location and itinerary, and individual qualifications. However, they provide a general understanding of the earning potential for deck and engine department roles within the cruise industry. For instance, a cruise ship captain can earn an average salary of $98,000, while a newly-appointed cruise director may make around $45,000. When negotiating pay, it’s important to consider the discrepancies that may exist between different positions.

In addition, overseeing a group of engineers, making sure work is done quickly, and keeping the ship operationally ready for inspections are also part of this duty. There's a big gap between the highest-paid and lowest-paid cruise-ship workers. Search for all salaries on our compensation page or add your salary to help unlock the page. We've negotiated thousands of offers and regularly achieve $30k+ (sometimes $300k+) increases. Get your salary negotiated or your resume reviewed by the real experts - recruiters who do it daily.

This will not only lead to increased tips but also improve your chances of receiving positive feedback and recommendations, which can help you advance in your career. The table below shows the salaries of cruise ship medical staff, including doctors and nurses. In addition to competitive salaries, cruise ship medical staff may also receive benefits such as accommodation, food, and medical care. While the median average salary for cruise ship workers may be less than that of the average American, it’s important to consider the unique nature of the job. Cruise ship contracts can last anywhere between 2 and 11 months, with most lasting 4 to 8 months, meaning that employees have the opportunity to earn a significant amount of money in a short amount of time. From a North American or Western European perspective, the salary for many jobs on cruise ships at first glance may seem low relative to similar shore-based positions.

Embarking on a career in the cruise industry can be both exciting and rewarding. To truly make the most of this opportunity, it's essential to understand the factors affecting cruise ship salaries and how to maximise your earning potential. The deck and engine departments are essential components of a cruise ship's operations, ensuring the safety and technical functionality of the vessel. These roles often require specialised training and qualifications, and the salaries reflect this expertise. Here's an overview of some key deck and engine department positions and their salary ranges. It's important to note that these salary figures are approximate and can vary based on the factors mentioned earlier, such as cruise line reputation and geographical location.

It’s important to remember that the annual salary figures don’t consider the number of hours worked. Crew members work long hours of up to 14 hours per day, seven days a week. While it may sound like the exotic vacation of a lifetime, there is much work behind the scenes.

What's Included in on a Cruise

what is a cruise

If you're delayed in your arrival at the port, the ship will not wait for you. This fast-growing line has dominated the world of river cruising for North Americans for years, and in the last few years, it's become a significant player in upscale ocean cruising as well. Viking's 80 river ships operate on just about every major river in the world, and its 10 ocean ships (up from just one in 2015) can be found in a growing number of destinations, too.

Board Your Ship As Soon As You Can on Embarkation Day and Take a Ship Tour

Wet seasons and dry seasons are changing in parts of the world where cruises frequently travel, like Mexico, and extreme temperatures are becoming the norm especially in summer months. If it's a port-intensive week in the Mediterranean, don't exhaust yourself by booking one tour after another. That doesn't mean you should board your ship without doing some research on your own ahead of time. Popular cruise destinations like the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska, and the South Pacific allow you to explore breathtaking landscapes, immerse yourself in different cultures, and create lasting memories. Whether you prefer lounging on pristine beaches, embarking on thrilling adventures, or discovering historical landmarks, there’s a cruise destination that will captivate your imagination.

Add to that gratuities, which run about $15 per person, per day. Combined, these fees can add considerably to the cost of your cruise. While every cabin has air conditioning, they don’t have fans of any kind. That’s not an issue if you have a balcony and open your door, but any interior room is going to get a little stuffy — especially if you’re the sort of person that’s used to airflow.

In addition to all of those, the staff puts on activities throughout the day. These range from trivia contests to dance parties and everything in between. You’ll get a daily schedule of everything going on delivered to your stateroom the night before or you can view it on the phone app for your cruise line. Your CabinWhile on the ship, the cabin on the ship is your home away from home. First-time cruisers are always surprised at the size of a cruise cabin.

Many Hotels Have Free Cruise ParkingOne of the big attractions to cruising is that many people live within driving distance of a port. Instead of having to fly for a Caribbean vacation, you can drive to the port and then hop on a ship. We have dozens and dozens aimed at first-time cruisers here. When you enter the port terminal, the first thing you’ll do is enter and show your boarding pass and ID. Cruise ship security is similar to going through an airport, but not as invasive. After having your documents checked, you’ll place your carry-on bag on an x-ray machine and then pass through a metal detector.

If you think that bottle of tequila you just bought in Cozumel will make for a fun evening, think again. Just like on embarkation day, you can’t bring on bottles of booze from ports. Anything bought in port will be held on the ship and delivered back to your stateroom the night before you leave. Your first thought when you see the prices of shore excursions is that they are expensive. It’s not unusual for a shore excursion that is just 3-4 hours run more than $100 per person. Even if you are headed to the sunny Caribbean, it’s still a good idea to bring some warm clothes.

The pros and cons of cruises, recapped

A second, bigger ship called Ilma that's already open for bookings debuts later this year. Princess Cruises' customers also like its wide range of itineraries, including voyages in Asia and Australia, as well as closer-to-home places like the Caribbean. It's long been one of the dominant lines in the Alaska cruise market. Operating a fast-growing fleet of tough but upscale expedition ships (none carrying more than 264 passengers), Ponant is known for voyages to places like Antarctica and the Arctic.

what is a cruise

Formal night is still a thing.

Book directly with the cruise line to cut out the middleman in case there is an issue with your reservation. If you don’t know what cruise line you want to sail, then an aggregator like Expedia can search multiple lines at once. With everything seemingly so perfect on the ship, it can be easy to think that ports of call are perfect as well. To be fair, ports you visit will be pretty safe, especially in the tourist areas. Venture outside of these spots, however, and it’s just like any other place. There are good parts of town and places where you don’t want to venture.

Plus, there will be a restaurant manager and often deputy managers who hover in the background to make sure everything is just right. It's like a small army of service staff there to make sure you have a perfect experience. Even on the most mass-market, lowest-cost cruises, you'll have a room attendant who is likely to get to know you by name and offer help with anything you need on board. She or he typically also will make up and clean your room at least once and sometimes twice every day — unless you request otherwise.

This is especially the case if you’re the sort of person who likes to take your time getting ready in the morning while sipping on a cup of coffee or just having your own private space to take in the view. Having the fresh air — and the million-dollar views — from your balcony is worth the extra cost if you want to pay a little more for your trip. As we just said, interior cabins are great for first-time cruisers who are usually out around the ship the entire trip.

The way to do this is to tie a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases to your onboard account. This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit). There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which brings 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on travel and 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on dining. Some of the biggest cruise ship horror stories you'll find on the internet are tales of cruising newbies who racked up thousands of dollars in cellphone charges while on ships. This can happen when you leave your phone turned on and, say, watch videos on the internet. Many first-time cruisers assume they can't bring their own drinks on board a ship.

You often can find a package deal from even mass-market lines where many of the "extras" on your cruise are included in the price you pay up front. On traditional ocean-going ships, many ship-organized shore excursions will be group outings where you will join as many as 30 or 40 of your fellow cruisers with a guide. Often, these tours involve traveling with your group on a motorcoach to reach whatever sight or sights you are touring. Just how much of a group-tour feel your cruise has will depend a lot on which ship you are on and how you arrange your port activities.

Don’t forget that many travelers are looking to use leftover credits they have from the pandemic, which further compounds the demand. A week or so is the sweet spot for most first-time cruisers, which will offer three to six ports. Three-day sampler itineraries won’t allow you to explore more than one or two destinations, and you can’t decompress as thoroughly, either. Still, Leppert suggests a weekend trip could be enough for those that just want to try out cruising for the first time to see if you like it. You also won't find snack vending machines onboard your ship, but you can hit up some of the shops for a junk food fix. Or bring along your favorite salty or sweet snacks from home to keep in your cabin.

Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Norwegian vessels recently was priced at $39.99 per person per day, if you bought it in advance. Norwegian also offers a less expensive plan that doesn't allow video streaming for $29.99 per person per day if purchased in advance. Like the ships of the Breakaway and Breakaway-plus classes, the Prima Class ships have a lively zone that mixes casino space, bars, eateries and entertainment that sprawls across decks 6, 7 and 8. These vessels also have outdoor eating space in an area called Ocean Boulevard. The Breakaway- and Breakaway Plus-class ships have innovative outdoor promenades called The Waterfront lined with seating for many restaurants and bars.

Glacier Bay, Alaska

Like Great Stirrup Cay, the island’s big draw is the beach and water. As well, Harvest Caye has a large freshwater pool, as well as a number of bars and restaurants, wildlife exhibits, ziplining, and more to do. You can board a cruise anywhere from London to Lisbon to Los Angeles.

One notable outlier among the smaller ships is the 2,186-passenger Pride of America. Sporting a patriotic U.S. theme (you'll find venues named after Thomas Jefferson and John Adams), and a distinct array of lounges and entertainment, it's the only big cruise vessel based year-round in Hawaii. Unveiled in 2019, Norwegian Encore is, notably, the 23rd biggest cruise ship in the world as of this story's publishing (it will drop in the rankings over the coming years as additional megaships debut). Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have significantly more bigger vessels.

A cruise to Civitavecchia is a chance for you to hop a quick train to Rome and explore the enormous history through ruins, galleries and The Vatican museums. Boston is home to great sports, great food and loads of history with the Freedom Trail and Harvard. Discover imaginative architecture, impressive Spanish dishes and beautiful excursions into nature when you cruise to Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. Explore Baltimore’s rich history and culture as you visit the local neighborhoods which are home to important world changing events.

However, what you spend on cruise fare is just a portion of what you’ll spend on your entire cruise. The Haven is a luxurious, high-end “resort within a resort” experience with dedicated space and amenities like a pool, restaurant, and bar that are only open to The Haven guests. If you haven’t yet sailed Norwegian, you might not be sure what to expect.

Complete Guide to Sailing Norwegian Cruise Line (What It’s Like)

In short, if you want to turn a Norwegian cruise into a luxury experience, you can do that, too. Norwegian really is the line where you make the trip what you want it to be. That said, the line does offer some smaller ships that aren't quite as big and bustling as its giants.

Honolulu, with its near perfect weather every day and beautiful mountains and tropical landscapes, is a destination not to be missed. With near perfect tropical weather and natural attractions, there is always an adventure for everyone cruising to Cairns – from white water rafting to hiking and diving. Buenos Aires is a charming European style city with the perfect combination of new world characteristics mixed with old world history and culture. For decades Bali has lured visitors with its beautiful beaches, forests and mountains and a culture that is devoted to the arts.

New ships are especially modern and gorgeous, and the newer things to do like the go-kart track are lots of fun. If you want to better budget your cruise, then you might want a drink package. This way, you don’t have to worry about a surprise bill at the end of your cruise. Passengers staying here also have a 24-hour butler and personal concierge.

That means the cruise line is more limited when it comes to U.S. departure ports. Smaller ports typically don’t have as many sailing options as you will find with larger lines. The cruise line charges for many amenities on the ship, and at prices higher than you’ll find on other lines.

Princess recently was charging just $14.99 per person per day for a WiFi package. Norwegian also offers dedicated teen zones and programming on ships for children ages 13 to 17. Called Entourage, the teen zone is a place for teens to hang out, dance and play games, and it's supervised by counselors who plan activities and challenges. Norwegian also has rooms on its ships for babies and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years.

Culinary excellence, romance, and some shipwreck adventures—Mexico cruising. Spend the extra time you need to truly discover bliss in paradise with a Hawaii Cruisetour. Kiss the everyday goodbye, find unique exotic natural beauty and cultural excitement in Hawaii. Water sports and intriguing tropical ports highlight the Caribbean region. Enter a new world of mysterious cultures and ancient traditions on a cruise through Asia with Norwegian Cruise Line.

In addition, a 20% gratuity is added to the bill at bars, extra-charge specialty restaurants and ship spas. Some of the extra-charge restaurants come with a flat fee (the teppanyaki outlets are $59 per person, not including the cost of drinks). One thing you need to know upfront about going on a Norwegian cruise is that there are a lot of extra charges — and sometimes quite high extra charges — on the line's ships, particularly for things like restaurants. Norwegian is also a mass-market brand, not a luxury cruise operator. Still, as we'll explain below, it offers a wide range of accommodations, some of which fall squarely in the luxury segment.

Follow our social media and blog for the latest cruise and travel news, including our best vacation deals. See the beautiful sights of Cape Town, South Africa’s most visited city, which offers cruisers natural beauty, plentiful wine, historical significance and a sense of peace. Latitude Rewards awards members with points based on each night they sail, and they can earn bonus nights when booking certain categories of suites. You can find cruise bargains for as low as $350 on four-night cruises, but if you want to splurge and do a longer cruise, expect to pay as much as $4,600 or more (especially if you book a suite or a Haven category room). Depending on how long you want to sail and where you're going, you can find cruises as brief as two nights and as long as 21 days or more. NCL spans the globe with sailings to every continent (even Antarctica) on a wide range of ships.

In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of Norwegian ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night. In addition, several Norwegian ships offer dinner theater venues with circus-type productions, and one vessel, Norwegian Getaway, features a magic-infused dinner theater show in a steampunk-inspired space called The Illusionarium. You might even find Starbucks stores on some ships (the one-year-old Norwegian Prima has two!) and there are Starbucks products on every Norwegian vessel. Also, some ships have private restaurants just for passengers staying in The Haven. On the ships that have them, they are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge where solo travelers can mingle at daily happy hour gatherings.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Martha's Vineyard was a hub for merchant ships carrying exotic cargo from the far corners of the world. Today, the island is one of the most popular vacation spots in New England, comprised of six distinct towns. Historic Edgartown is the most genteel town on the island, featuring freshly painted white clapboard colonial homes and manicured gardens. One of Boston’s defining moments in history is the Boston Tea Party, and you can learn about that event in an interactive and fun way at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is home to over 17 restaurants along with the popular Quincy Market Hall Colonnade, a long hall where you can sample over 30 food merchants serving up East Coast and international cuisine. Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts is worth a visit during a Boston cruise port of call if you love art since it houses one of the most comprehensive art collections in the world. Over 400,000 pieces line the walls and floors of the Museum of Fine Arts, ranging from ancient sculptures to contemporary paintings. The underwater plateau that makes up Stellwagen Bank is rich in nutrients, making it a prime place for migrating whales to stop and feed. That also makes it the place to head for visitors to Boston who want to do some whale watching off the coast.

Walk the 2.5-mile, red-lined Freedom Trail past 16 historical sites. Quirky, bohemian Key West is so tiny you can explore it on foot, whether you’re headed for the white sands and colorful reefs of Fort Zachary Taylor State Park or prefer to check out the island’s many art galleries. Meander the streets to find historic wonders and modern neighborhoods; stores and restaurants with old-time character; and generous green spaces alongside a beautiful waterfront. See legendary figures come alive at buildings and attractions on the Freedom Trail, including the Paul Revere House and Old South Meeting House, and in Lexington and Concord just outside.

The natural beauty that surrounds Bar Harbor is accented with ocean cliffs, glacier‐formed lakes and valleys, stunning mountain vistas, and pine forest. This beauty has been captured in the works of Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, and many other great artists. Experience a traditional, New England favorite, the lobsterbake luncheon. Set at the water’s edge, enjoy lobsters, clams, and mussels steamed the old-fashioned way, over a fire in kelp. As you dine, delight in the sounds of a local blue grass band. Please visit our most frequently asked questions page on cruise preparation, transportation, safety and security, and more.

You’ll be escorted on a 1-hour tour through the facility by a guide dressed in 18th century garb. During the tour you’ll get to participate in reenactments like a city hall meeting as well as tour a ship fully rebuilt to reflect the ship that was ransacked during the Boston Tea Party.
